Every person who walksthrough our doorshas a story.

Behind the mission is a human reality. The people who find us have experienced isolation, lost opportunity, and a gap between being treated and truly thriving. These are their experiences.

After the Diagnosis — Clubhouse Michigan
After the Diagnosis
“I was told I was stable. But I had lost my job, my friends had drifted away, and I didn't know who I was anymore. Stable didn't feel like enough.”

Many of the people who find us have been through a mental health crisis — a hospitalization, a lost job, a relationship that couldn't survive the weight of it all. They arrive not broken, but searching for what comes next.

More Than a Prescription — Clubhouse Michigan
More Than a Prescription
“I had been managing my symptoms for years. But managing wasn't living. I needed somewhere to be, something to contribute — people who were counting on me to show up.”

Recovery is more than a prescription and a follow-up appointment. The people we serve want to work, to learn, to build something. They have skills, dreams, and energy waiting to be directed toward a life that matters.

The Day Someone Was Waiting — Clubhouse Michigan
The Day Someone Was Waiting
“When I walked in, someone said, 'We've been waiting for you.' I thought they were just being polite. Then I realized they meant it — and that changed everything.”

Belonging is not a luxury. For people living with mental illness, being known by name — being missed when you don't show up — is a form of medicine that no clinical system has ever fully provided. That's what a Clubhouse does.

— An experience shared across our Clubhouses statewide

These stories are why Clubhouse Michigan exists — not just to treat, but to welcome, to connect, and to help people build lives worth living.

Community connection at a Michigan Clubhouse
What is a Clubhouse?

A restorative environment where you are a member, not a patient.

A Clubhouse is a community-based center dedicated to supporting and empowering people living with mental illness, known as Clubhouse members. Based on the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation, each Clubhouse offers a collaborative, restorative environment where members can recover by gaining access to opportunities for employment, socialization, education, skill development, housing, and improved wellness.

Organized around the belief that every individual has something valuable to contribute to society, Clubhouses effectively help people build self-confidence and end the social and economic isolation so often associated with mental illness.

Vision: Provide equal opportunities for everyone with a mental illness in Michigan to achieve their aspirations through the support of a Clubhouse in their community.
How It Works

A proven, evidence-based model.

The Clubhouse Model centers on four main pillars that empower members to rebuild their lives, confidence, and purpose — all within a community that believes in them.

The Work-Ordered Day

Members and staff work side-by-side to run the Clubhouse — creating real purpose, not busy work.

Employment

Transitional, Supported, and Independent Employment pathways back into the workforce.

Education

Tutoring and support to help members finish degrees, certifications, and educational goals.

Housing & Community

Securing affordable, safe housing and providing lifelong community belonging.

The proof is in the people.

System Positioning

Why It Matters In the Bigger Picture

Within the behavioral health system, Clubhouses fill a critical gap. While crisis services stabilize individuals, they rarely provide a pathway to a meaningful life.

By focusing on social determinants of health — employment, education, and community connection — Clubhouses offer an ongoing, cost-effective infrastructure for lifelong recovery.

“We align policy and practice to ensure that people living with mental illness have access to the support they need to thrive.”

Advocacy & Policy

An Opportunity for Lasting Change.

When we invest in the Clubhouse Model, we aren't just funding a program — we are building an infrastructure of care that transforms communities and ensures every person living with mental illness in Michigan has the right to recovery and belonging.

Policy Alignment

We work with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to embed Clubhouse funding into state mental health budgets.

Systems Advocacy

Partnering with policymakers, healthcare systems, and community leaders to prioritize meaningful rehabilitation over crisis-only care.

Community Coalitions

Building collaborative relationships with NAMI, PRA, and Clubhouse International to amplify Michigan voices statewide.

Partnering with policymakers and community leaders, we advocate for structural changes that prioritize meaningful rehabilitation over crisis-only care.
